Crane boom collapsed off Mumbai
On March 8, 2020, a crane boom collapsed on the 'LTS 3000' in the Indian Ocean off Mumbai. Two workers were injured and a platform jacket plunged into the sea. One of them suffered a broken a leg, while the other’s injury was not specified. Both were airlifted to hospital. The incident occurred while the ship was working for the India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation on the Cluster 8 offshore development west of Mumbai. The collapsed crane was a 3,000 ton PC-42 HVY crane with a 82 metre boom, capable of handling its maximum capacity at 27 metres radius. A failure in the boom hoist rope or winch occurred, which allowed the boom to drop with the load on the hook. The jacket has remained buoyant and has been towed towards a yard in the Mumbai area for salvage. The ship was expected to follow.
