Barges sank alongside bulkcarrier

Sat Aug 03 17:33:33 CEST 2019 Timsen

Two barges loaded with coal sank in stormy seas of the Tropical Storm Wipha on Aug 1, 2019, night off Koh Si Chang in Chon Buri, spilling tonnes of coal into the sea. The barges with a combined capacity of 2,400 tonnes broke loose from the "Southampton" in rough seas while being loaded with coal. No injuries were reported. Municipal officials were coordinating with the owner of the barges to organise a clean-up operation to limit damage to marine life and salvage the barges. The Pollution Control Department has sent inspectors to the site to assess the situation. An initial inspection has not detected any oil spillage. However, a more thorough inspection was put on hold due to the rough conditions. The company UnderWater Engineering Co., Ltd. was contracted for the salvage of the barges which were resting at 15 meters depth, with the coal remaining inside. A 500-meter safety zone will be implemented to prevent coal from spreading. The salvage envisaged a partial underwater offloading of the coal.

Ingrid C rescued five Pinoys from sinking passenger boat

Tue Nov 29 10:14:17 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Ingrid C" on Nov 28, 2016, rescued five Philippino crew members of the seven-crew passenger vessel "Kan Zam Express" which was sinking in a typhoon 50 miles west of Itbayat Island in the Luzon Strait. The bulkcarrier was about 50 miles west of the Batanes. The SAR operation took place in the overlapping waters of Taiwan and Philippines at 2 p.m. jointly with the South fleet and the "Wei Xing" and was coordinated by the MRCC Taiwan. Upon arrival, the boat was floating with the bow up and stern submerged in the sea, surrounded by some life rafts. The Philippines Coast Guard was still trying to find two missing crew members. The passenger vessel was en route to Taiwan. It went down stern first. The "Ingrid C" arrived at Kaohsiung on Nov 29.
