Car lost in bridge allision
Coming from Hainaut on the way home to Antwerp, the "Louis" 1373 ts (EU-No.: 06004211), lost a car from the deck when passing the Scheldt bridge in Temse on June 5, 2016, at 5.18 p.m. The master had estimated the distance between the water and the bridge incorrectly so that the car was torn off and pushed into the fairway. The water was exceptionally high due to the heavy rainfalls during the past days, and the passage was apparently insufficient for the tanker. The captain tried to reverse but could not avoid an allision. The fire brigade arrived at the scene to assess the damage to the bridge which was found to be minimal. In vain they tried to find the car with a plumb line and a magnet. There was no nuisance for shipping as the water depth was eight meters. The strong current was additionally dangerous for diving. After the fire department decided to call off the search, the maritime police arrived at the scene in order to finalize the investigations into the accident.
