Bulkcarrier split into several parts
The "Los Llanitos" stranded in Barra de Navidad, Jalisco, since Oct 23, 2015, finally split into at least three sections. The structure of the vessel did not withstand the sea surge, which caused the accomodation block which had a height of 30 meters, to collapse. Almost half of the stern was sunk and was tilting to port, open to the impact of the waves including the main engine and auxiliary generators, power generators which may still contain some oil residues. Despite the multiple fractures, Rafael Vaca, head of the Captaincy of Port in Manzanillo, considered that the current condition of the "Los Llanitos" did not represent a danger for navigation, nor for the fishing community of the area. Grounded bulkcarrier breaking apart
The "Los Llanitos", stranded in the Bahía Graham, Barra de Navidad, Jalisco, after the passage of hurricane Patricia, broke in two close to the engine room. Only the plates of the cargo holds in the upper part were keeping the ship's halves united. The waves detached large areas from the side of the ship, further weakering the structure. During July, PROFEPA detected on two occasions traces of hydrocarbons in the sea. In spite of the recommendations, the company responsible for the wreck has not placed containment barriers around the ship. The Navy Secretariat of Mexico conducted inspections and surveillance tours in the area and collected water samples that will be analyzed at the Pacific Oceanographic Institute. For the Port Captaincy of Manzanillo, the "Los Llanitos" did neither represent a danger for navigation, nor for the fishing community in the zone. Inhabitants of Barra de Navidad concerned about pollution threat
The increasingly weak structure of the "Los Llanitos" and the recent leakage of fuel from inside the engine room raised concerns by the inhabitants of the town of Barra de Navidad, Jalisco. They feared that the substances could affect the marine ecosystem and cause great damage to the fishing business and tourism in the region. The wreck was located just 16 kilometers from the town of Barra de Navidad, one of the busiest tourist areas on the Jalisco Coast. The hull was constantly being impacted by waves, tidal waves and its structure could collapse at any time. Although Profepa recommended on July 11 the immediate installation of absorption and containment barriers around the vessel, the responsible company Marine Solutions has ignored this until July 17.
