Beam trawler aground off Thyborøn
On June 28 at 2:08 a.m. the port guard in Thyborøn alerted the local lifeboat station because of problems with the Dutch trawler “Mare Frisicum – LO 28” (MMSI-Nr.: 244630078) which was under tow, just south of Thyborøn. The trawler had suffered a fouled propeller and had been taken in tow by a partner trawler which unfortunately suffered engine trouble and had to let go the towing wire. Immediately the lifeboats “Martha Lerche” and “FRB 16”, the little fast rescue boat with 870 hp, were sent to assist the distressed trawler which had in the meantime run aground between two groynes just south of the approach canal. On scene was a severe gale with rain and high swell. At one time both trawlers went aground. While the engine trouble could be resolved, the propeller was damaged in the bottom touch so that the ship could no longer participate in the salvage work. The “Mare Frisicum” was pushed over the sand bars off the coast and got stuck between the two groynes 52 and 53. But the high swell helped in the rescue, and after the “FRB 16” and the “Martha Lerche” had connected to the trawler, they managed to pull the Dutchman off and tow it to Thyborøn three hours later, where it could unload the catch, before divers were sent down, cleared the propeller and inspected the damage which was thought to be significant.
