Russian shadow fleet tanker NUC near undersea cable
The 'Line', another ship from the so-called Russian shadow fleet has been spotted near the underwater power cable Estlink-2. The tanker approached the cable on Dec 29, 2024, en route from Vysotsk to Tallinn. The Finnish Coastguard became aware of the ship and made contact with it. In recent months the ship has operated between Turkey and Russia.According to the coast guard, it was currently not believed that the ship posed any particular risk or that it was involved in the cable damage caused by the tanker "Eagle-S" on Christmas. Nevertheless, the authorities were alarmed, as intelligence agents have long suspected that Russia is systematically gaining an overview of offshore wind farms, gas pipelines and underwater power and internet cables in the North and Baltic Seas. Possibly so that they could be deliberately sabotaged. On Dec 31, the tanker was NUC in pos. 59° 60' N 026° 10' E. On Jan 1, 2025, it dropped anchor off Porvoo in pos. 59° 54' N 026° 06' E.
Ship added to EU sanction list
The European Union has adopted its newest sanctions package on Dec 16, 2024, at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, adding 52 new vessels, among them the 'Line', to the sanctions list that have been deemed by the EU to be supporting Russia’s war machine. The vessels that have been sanctioned are primarily involved in circumventing the oil price cap mechanism implemented by the West, in arms deliveries, and in the transportation of stolen grain. This latest package has brought the total number of vessels sanctioned by the EU to 79. The majority of the vessels are involved in the transport of Russian oil and in transporting arms for the Russian military. The sanctions package also targets a total of 54 individuals and 30 entities that are deemed to be bolstering Russia’s war effort. Among them, there are also entities and individuals in China and North Korea who have been deemed to be supplying Russia with dual-use materials to support Russia’s military efforts. Two senior North Korean officials and seven Chinese individuals and companies have been targeted in the latest sanctions. The purpose of the sanctions has been defined to increase the operational costs for Russia by banning them from ports in the EU and hindering them from receiving maritime services.
Medevac in Alboran Sea
In the night of March 12, 2021, the '', enroute from La Coruna to Arzew, requested the urgent medevac of a sic crew member from the MRCC of Salvamento Marítimo in Almería. The SAR helicopter Helimer 203 was deplyed and hoisted the crew member. He was taken to the airport from where he was transferred by medical ambulance to a hospital.
