Crew stranded on damaged vessel

Wed Dec 03 19:28:02 CET 2014 Timsen

12 Ukrainian sailors have been stranded onboard the "Lime". Eight months ago, they had been contacted by the M & P Lime Shipping Ltd. and were told that their vessel was being prepared. Not to be idle, the sailors were asked to go to Turkey on another vessel, the "Lime", to pick up construction materials. One month later the crew was promised to be paid and sailed again. The crew lost patience and threatened the employer to strike. In response, the owner asked to deliver the goods to the port of Dnepropetrovsk and promised to pay the wages. The "Lime" aground on Dnieper river above Zaporozhye on Nov 14 with a pilot on board, en route to Dnepropetrovsk. The vessel sustained a hole with length of five meters and a width of 80 cm and started to take in water. The crew managed to control the water ingress, and the vessel reached Dnepropetrovsk where it anchored. The owner accused them of damaging the ship and the cargo and said that their money will be written off on account of repairs. Now they have no money, and the ship was running out of supplies and power. The owner said he had offered the crew to take the vessel to Kherson for repairs and promised to pay the crew.
