Medevac off Newport
The US Coast Guard medevaced a crew member of the 'Malto Hope', enroute from Kobe, approximately 57 miles offshore Newport after he suffered a medical emergency on July 16, 2022. Coast Guard watchstanders received a report in the evening of a 29-year-old male who had suffered from a stroke and related medical complications aboard the vessel approximately 1,000 miles west of the Oregon coast. Watchstanders at the 13th Coast Guard District Command Center recommended the ship transit closer to shore to be within range for a medical evacuation from a Coast Guard helicopter. Once the vessel was within response range, Coast Guard watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport to hoist the man. The aircrew arrived on scene on July 18 shortly after 10:30 a.m., hoisted the man and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services at Air Facility Newport in stable condition. Search for missing crew member
A 53-year old crewman disappeared from the "Malto Hope" in the evening of May 12, 2014. The vessel was 40 miles from Attu in the Aleutian Islands when the crewman disappeared. But the exact location of where he may have gone overboard was unknown. The Coast Guard in Juneau dispatched a C-130 aircraft out of Kodiak to help search for the missing mariner. But the plane was only on scene for about a half-hour because of thick fog that restricted a search of the area. Two Good Samaritan vessels also helped search the vicinity. The CG issued a series of urgent marine broadcasts as the freighter continues searching for the missing man. The vessel left Vancouver early last week for its trip west to Japan.
