Container ship rescued 34 Libyan migrants
In the early morning of Jan 20, 2024, the Port Authorities of Kalos Ports and Kokkini Pyrgos were informed about the rescue of 34 migrants from a rubber boat, about 10 meters long,by the 'Lider Halil, en route from Tripolis to Mersin, 38 nautical miles southwest of Gavdos. Among them were 33 adults and one minor. The ship then sailed to the bay of Kala Limeni, where the castaways were disembarked and transferred to the port of Heraklion with the assistance of the Municipality of Phaistos. The Central Port Authority of Heraklion, which was conducting the preliminary investigation, arrested two people, aged 18 and 25, as human traffickers The migrants had paid 3,000-7,000 Euro fo the transfer and had set out from the shores of Derna in Libya.
Engine trouble off Kilitbahir
On May 30, 2021, the 'Lider Halil' suffered an engine failure whlie sailing from Çanakkale to El Dekheila Port. The ship dropped anchor in front of Kilitbahir. The tug 'Nazim Tur' and the fast rescue boat 'Kegm 9' were deployed to the scene by Coastal Safety. The ship, which was bound from Istanbul to Novorossyisk with an ETA as of June 2, was towed to an anchorage off Erisköy and moored in pos. 40° 2.33' N 026° 18.54' E in the afternoon where it remained stationary as of May 31.
