Owner of Lia Jan fined for keeping inaccurate logbook
The owner of the "Lia Jan (WD63)" has been ordered to pay over £10,667.25 in fines and costs and the master a total of £5,130 after pleading guilty to three offences relating to keeping an inaccurate logbook for cod, megrim and anglerfish. The vessel was boarded on May 31, 2013, by marine enforcement officers from the HMS "Tyne" in the Celtic Sea (Area VIIg). The officers inspected both the logbook and fishroom and estimated that the caught megrim and anglerfish had been significantly under-recorded. The vessel was detained to Newlyn for further investigation. On June 5, 2013, Truro Magistrates’ Court heard that between May 25 and June 1 the logbook was not completed accurately. When weighed ashore, the anglerfish was under-recorded by 61.92% (1,014.82 kg) and the megrim by 16.41% (180.48 kg). The master, Paulo Meireles, was fined £1,670 for each logbook offence and a £120 victim surcharge. The owner, Denis O’Flaherty, was fined £1,670 for each offence, £5,537.25 in costs and a £120 victim surcharge.
