Aft of Leila totally gutted by fire - ship traffic on Mittelland Canal resumed

After the fire on the "Laila" on the Mittelland Canal at Gehlenbeck/Frotheim in the afternoon of Oct 28 no pollution was observed, and the environmental authority of the Minden-Lübbecke Community allowed ship traffic to be resumed the same evening. The fire rescue Espelkamp and Hille was on scene with more than 80 men untiil 9 p.m. and was then released by the fire rescue Lübbecke. The "Laila" which had taken a cargo of 1200 heating oil in Essen bound for Hannover was pushed by a Polish tug assisted by one more vessel at 11 p.m. to the port of Hille where experts were to survey the ship. in the afternoon of Oct 29. The police Minden questioned the crew of two. The ship was thought to be a total loss with an assessed damage of 600000 - 700000 Euro. The superstructure and the engine room including the cargo pumps and hydraulic systems were totaly gutted. The deck hand had remarked the fire behind the refrigerator and had tried to extinguish it, but instead it increased within short time forcing the crew to flee onto the foreship. When the investigations are finished, a pusher tug is to bring the ship to Hannover where the cargo which remained undamaged will be unloaded. Tanker ablaze on Mittelland Canal

In the afternoon of Oct 28, 2012, at 3.40 p.m. a fire broke out aboard the "Leila" which was underway from Duisburg to Minden with a cargo of 1200 tons oil on the Mittelland Canal between Hille and Lübbecke-Gehlenbeck at that time. The fire started in the cabin and spread to the engine room. One crew member had to be treated in hospital with suspect of a smoke gas inhalation. The canal was closed for ship traffic. The fire rescue attacked the blaze which gutted the whole stern area from both canal sides with 70 men. The tanks were so far not affected.
