Patrol boat crashed into cruise ship pontoon in Cobh

Tue Aug 27 17:04:55 CEST 2013 Timsen

In the afternoon of Aug 24, 2013,the "LÉ Aoife"crashed into a pontoon at the deep water quay in Cobh, County Cork. Engineers from the Naval Service started assessing damage to her bow above the waterline. The accident was caused by a mechanical problem which led to the vessel propelling forwards instead backing off. The age of the ship may also have been a factor. The ship was taken back to the naval base at Haulbowline. Engineers will be assessing the damage in the next couple of days. Damage to the pontoon, used by cruise liners, was minimal.
