Attackers threw stones on barge

Thu Apr 30 11:11:52 CEST 2020 Timsen

On April 27, 2020, at 4.30 p.m. the 'Laus Deo' was hit by ball sized stones on the IJssel near Deventer. The ship was on the way from Sneek to Xanten to collect a load of gravel that has to go to Leeuwarden later this week. When it passed a beach near Deventer there was a group of 10 to 15 young people. Two of them started throwing stones at the ship. Skipper Sjerp Horjus from Sneek was in the wheelhouse, his wife and the children were walking on the deck or sitting in front of the window. The skipper blwe the ship's horn. However, several stones were thrown and ended up on or against the ship. Horjus then started to take pictures and the police was called. While the ship was proceeding on its way, the police looked for the attackers, but they had already flown by then. Normally the was underway with one or two of his sons, but because of the corona crisis, the whole family decided to seek out the safety of the ship. So now besides his two sons, his wife, two daughters, a daughter-in-law and a grandchild were on board and could easily have been hit by such a stone.
