Medevac off Durban

Wed Jan 31 10:10:13 CET 2018 Timsen

On Jan 30, 2018, at 6 a.m. the NSRI Durban duty crew, NSRI ASR (Airborne sea rescue) rescue swimmers, the SA Air Force (SAAF) 15 Squadron and Netcare 911 rescue paramedics got prepared to depart from Durban to rendezvous with the "Lake D" 50 nautical miles off-shore of Durban to patient evacuate a 47 year old Filipino sailor suffering a stroke (CVA). The Airborne Sea Rescue team had already been alerted on Jan 29, and the ship was due to be closer to Durban by early morning on Jan 30. The rescue operation was conducted by a SAAF 15 Squadron Oryx helicopter which rendezvoused with the ship 50 nautical miles off Durban. NSRI rescue swimmers and Netcare 911 rescue paramedics were hoisted aboard the ship and the patient, in a serious but stable condition, was hoisted into the helicopter and he has been airlifted to hospital in Durban.
