Aid ship arrived in Ashdod
The "Lady Leyla" carrying aid for Gaza arrived in Ashdod on July 3, a week after Isreal and Turkey agreed to restore ties that soured over a deadly raid on an aid flotilla. The vessel docked at Ashdod port terminal in the afternoon after departing on July 1. The cargo was to be unloaded, inspected and sent on to the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Cargo ship underway from Turkey with aid for Gaza
The "Lady Leyla" sailed from Mersin for Ashdod on July 1, 2016, carrying aid for Gaza as part of a deal between Ankara and Israel. The ship was loaded with over 10,000 tonnes of supplies including food and toys when it set off from Mersin. It would take 30 hours to reach Israel and the aid would arrive in Gaza before Eid celebrations on July 5 marking the end of Ramadan. Ankara was seeking the lifting of Israel's naval blockade against the Palestinian enclave, but as part of a compromise its aid will be delivered via the Israeli port of Ashdod.
