Grounding in Ischia
Upon its arrival from Pozzuoli, the "Lady Carmela" ran aground on June 16, 2019, at 3 p.m. while manoevering in the port of Ischia, effectively blocking all marine connections to the renowned tourist resort of Campania. On board the ferry were about 100 tourists. The passengers were evacuated after two hours but had to wait for the retrieval of their cars and luggage until the ship was salvaged. The port of Ischia remained partially blocked waiting for the ferry to be refloated with the help of two long cables, one from the bow and the other from the stern, which were connected to the "Tondo of Marcus Aurelius", a stone structure in the center of the port, and a buoy placed in the port of Ischia under the watchful eye of the Coast Guard units. The port was to be reopened as soon as possible. The ship was in Ischia to undergo some technical checks and sailed again at midnight.
