Waal partially closed after ship grounding
The "Silke Diane" suffered water ingress on the Waal near Kekerdom on Dec 5, 2011. The vessel, which was loaded with 1700 tons scrap iron, was sailing upstream when, at 8.30 p.m. it ran aground due to the low tide. The cargo hold was breached. The local fire department and Rijkswaterstaat were alarmed at 9 p.m. and were able to keep the ship from sinking with dewatering pumps. During the salvage work the river was closed for convoys and broad ships. The "Silke Diane" had a draught of more than 2,2 metres and had to be lightered.
