Allision in Krotzenburg lock

Mon Feb 08 10:14:05 CET 2021 Timsen

On Feb 5, 2021, at 3:05 p.m. the 'KVB Tokko', 2714 ts (EU-No.: 04032780), loaded with 3,200 tonnes of scrap iron, along with the barge 'Paradizo II' (EU no .: 02335030), enroute of Aschaffenburg to Kehl no he Main, was involved in an allision in the Krotzenburg lock at river kilometer 64.5. It came too close to the pier head due to a maneuvering mistake of the 63-year-old skipper. The barge was pulled onto the pierhead by the strong undercurrent. Two of the seven chambers of the wall passage at port side were breached with ensuing water ingress between the hull plates and the cargo area. Although a connecting wire also broke as a result of the impact, the skipper was able to get the situation under control and to secure the convoy aat the lock dam. The Aschaffenburg Waterways and Shipping Authority imposed a sailing ban until the damage at the port side was repaired. A diving company was commissioned to seal the leaks and carried out the repairs during the night under the supervision of the Frankfurt Water Police. The functionality of the lock was not impaired. The investigation continued, but no drugs or alcohol were thought to have contributed. The convoy remained stationary at the lock as of Feb 8.
