Korean freighter sank following collision

Mon Mar 13 13:06:58 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Kum San" sank off the east coast of China early on March 9, 2017, after colliding with a Chinese fuel tanker, which rescued 27 crew members. It started to list and finally capsized. The crew of 27 was rescued by the Chinese Coast Guard. The vessel was last seen anchored on March 8 near Lianyuanhang port. The accident took place near the port of Lianyuanhang in the Jiangsu province at 4 a.m., the ship sank by 6 a.m. Initial investigations found the "Kum San" transponder was either malfunctioning or turned off which may be the leading factor why the vessels collided. The "Kum San" was thought to be loaded with a cargo of possibly coal and had been at anchor for over a week. The tanker was not damaged in the incident.
