PAG whaler destroyed during surveillance in follow up of attack on KSL Sydney

Mon Oct 29 11:37:21 CET 2018 Timsen

During the sustained period of surveillance after the piracy attack against the "KSL Sydney", on Oct 16 about 340 miles off Somalia, EU NAVFOR, committed to disrupt PAG’s wherever and whenever the opportunity arises, destroyed a whaler on OCt 28. Rear Admiral Alfonso Perez de Nanclares, the EU NAVFOR Force Commander, had ordered counter-piracy forces to the area for further investigation. An EU NAVFOR Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) flew over the area to gain as much detailed information on suspected pirate activity as they could. The information the MPRA provided made it apparent that PAG whalers were active in the area, which would be used to launch further attacks on maritime shipping transiting the area. The suspicious whaler identified by the MPRA was later tracked down by the crew of ESPS "Castilla" to a small bay just off the Somali coast. The Force Commander then ordered it to be seized and towed out to sea where it was safely destroyed, making it harder for the pirates to attack maritime shipping in the future. Bulkcarrier attacked by pirates off Somalia

Sat Oct 20 18:06:01 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "KSL Sydney" was attacked by pirates off the east coast of Somalia on Oct 16, 2018. Agroup of four pirates armed with AK-47s approached the "KSL Sydney" in a speed boat while approximately 340 nautical miles off Mogadishu, Somalia. The Master raised the alarm and all crew mustered in the citadel. The attack was repelled when armed guards on board the bulk carrier returned fire, resulting in the pirates aborting the attack. All crew and the vessel are reported safe.
