Samples to be taken from tanker
The advocate for the fishing vessel 'Mercy Annai' has raised the issue with the Ministry of Shipping, Department of Fisheries, State government, and other concerned departments. The 'Korea Chemi' berthed within Nhava Sheva Port limits under Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority on Oct 21, raising concerns of potential evidence tampering. The Advocate has petitioned for a forensic analysis, including the collection of paint samples from both the 'Korea Chemi' and the 'Mercy Annai' for further investigations. The demands extend to initiating proceedings under the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for marine casualties and conducting a preliminary investigation in accordance with the provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act 1958. Compensation of 1 crore Indian Rupees for the 'Mercy Annai' and its crew, invoking Rule 3 of the Merchant Shipping (Regulation of Entry of Ships into Ports, Anchorages and Offshore Facilities) Rules 2012, is also being sought.
Collision off Kannur
The 'Korea Chemi', en route from Kabil, was in collision with the Indian fishing vessel 'Mercy Annai'. with six people on board, in pos. 12 00 50N, 074 19 50E, 45 nautical miles off the Kannur coast on Oct 19, 2023, causing significant damage to the fishing vessel. Two fishermen were thrown into the sea, and fishing nets were destroyed as the vessel was dragged for several meters. The tanker arrived in Nhava Sheva on Oct 21.
