Greenpeace is taking samples at Elgin platform
The "Koningin Juliana", which was chartered by Greenpeace, on Apr 2, 2012, has arrived near the exclusion zone which was established around the leaking gas platform "Elgin" off Aberdeen. The crew could see evidence of some environmental pollution. The vessel was in an area of extensive oil pollution 5 km off the abandoned platform, and the activists could see yellowish chemicals swimming in the oil spill. Greenpeace activists collected their first samples of water and air, which will be analyzed in Germany. The French company Total, which is spending $1 million per day on efforts to plug the leak on the "Elgin", is actually planning to move drilling rigs from two nearby fields, fly staff to the platform if it is deemed safe and send two underwater inspection vehicles to check where best to drill relief wells..
