Lifeboat recovered unmanned refugee boat
In the afternoon of Oct 8, 2022, around 12:20 p.m. the 'Paul Johannes' and the Coastal Relief Vehicle (KHV) of KNRM station Noordwijk were alerted to an unmanned refugee boat. The eight-meter long dinghy was found at sea by the dredger 'Causeway' about one nautical mile off the coast at the Langevelderslag in Noordwijk. The dinghy had been used by refugees to make a crossing from France to the United Kingdom. A numerical code was applied to the side of the refugee boat with a spray can. This number code is applied to refugee boats by the English Coast Guard as soon as they disembark the refugees. The four-digit code gives the abandoned boat an identity so that the boat does not cause unnecessary searches if it is found elsewhere. The crew of KNRM station Noordwijk has taken the refugee boat in tow and brought the boat ashore at beach exit 19. Upon inspection on board the boat, only a telephone with three separate SIM cards was found. The phone has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
