Ferry grounded after flooding

Fri Jan 03 10:00:17 CET 2020 Timsen

The KMP 'Terubuk I', ready to sail from the pier in Waipirit in the West Seram Regency to the Hunimua Pier, Liang Village, in the Central Maluku Regency, suffered a leak in the hull after waves smashed the ship against the quay, with ensuing water ingress and was threatened to sink on Jan 2, 2020, at 8 p.m. The captain had decided to leave the port of Waipirit early due to the waves, but allided with the pier with the port side stern of the ferry which was breached. He intentionally grounded the ferry with 64 passengers, 19 bikes, seven veicles, and two freight units aboard at Gemba in a distance of one kilometer from Waipirit.. The panicking passengers immediately were evacuated with life rafts, assisted by ASDP Waipirit officers using rubber boats. The evacuation process has been successfully completed. One female passenger suffered from shock and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The 10 crew members remained aboard. On Jan 4 the 'Terubuk' was towed to the port of Waipirit to unload the vehicles on board the vessel. An investigation was ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
