Allision off Merak

Mon Apr 03 11:33:37 CEST 2023 Timsen

The passenger m/v 'Mabuhay Nusantrara' (IMO: 6612908) allided with the anchored 'Labitra Karina' on April 1, 2023, at around 7 a.m. LT on April 1, 2023, at the anchorage of Merak Port in the Sunda Strait. The watch officer of the ferry timely saw the oncoming passenger ship and was making VHF calls, but this didn’t respond and struck the hull, which was breached in several places with ensuing water ingress. The ferry heaved up anchor and was run aground to avoid sinking. Some crew members were evacuated, others remained on board to assist the salvage operation.
