Details of pirate attack off Somalia
In position 04 28N 053 22E the helmsman of the tanker spotted a suspicious boat heading towards the "CPO Korea" at high speed on Oct 22, 2016. The tanker was en route from the UAE to Durban with cargo of oil products. At 6 a.m. the master switched to manual steering, preparing for anti-pirates maneuvering. At 06.10 a.m. the British security team fired warning shots, and SSAS was activated. At 06.12 a.m. a boat closed in at a cable’s distance, the security team and pirates exchanged fire, all crew members except the watch proceeded to the citadel. At 06.20 a.m. the boat turned away, and the master reported the thwarted attack to UKMTO and the company’s offices. No injures to crew and security team, no damages.
EU NAVFOR: Somali Pirates Attack First Ship in Two and a Half Years
Somali pirates launched their first attacked on a merchant vessel in more than two and a half years, the European Union’s counter piracy operation Naval Force Somalia (EU NAVFOR) has confirmed. The attack occurred Oct. 22 when a group of six armed pirates in a skiff chased and fired upon the UK-flagged chemical tanker CPO Korea approximately 330 nautical miles off the east coast of Somali.
