Ship aground off Levitha

Sun Feb 22 22:05:59 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Kerem S" ran aground at the northeastern tip of Levitha between Kos and Paros, 16 miles west of Ieros, on Feb 20, 2015 at 5.45 p.m. The vessel was disabled in the morning 4,5 miles west of Patmos and drifted towards the rocky coast of Levitha. The crew of six was evacuated by a Super Puma helicopter of the Greek airforce which took off at 6 p.m. in unfavourable weather conditions with winds of 7-8 Beaufort. The evacuation was completed at 7.15 p.m., and the castaways, five of Turkish nationality and one Greek, were taken to the Kos Hospital for medical checks where they arrived at 7.35 p.m. Also the lifeboat "Os.El.Akt" and a tug from Piraeus were dispatched. No spill was observed, but the ship was badly listing to starboard with its stern submerged and in danger of sinking. The unloaded vessel was enroute from Heraklion to Aliaga.
