German Warship Berlin Frees 25 Hostages from Pirates

Mon Mar 05 10:29:39 CET 2012 arnekiel

The Berlin, part of the European Union's anti-piracy force, rescued the crew of a hijacked dhow after responding to a distress call from a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden. The merchant vessel made the call to the E.U.'s Operation Atalanta to report it had repelled a pirate attack. The Berlin was the closest warship to the attack and sent a helicopter to the site. It located the suspected pirates, their skiff and a hijacked dhow with 25 hostages. The pirates said they would kill crew members if Berlin took any action against the dhow, an EU NAVFOR report said. The suspected pirates made their escape, but the crew of Indian nationals was rescued along with its dhow. After receiving food and water, along with medical attention for four mariners, the crew resumed its voyage. http://www.breakbulk.com/piracy/warship-berlin-frees-hostages-pirates-03-05
