Oil spill response of Swedish Coastguard at Immen wrecksite

Tue Jul 01 10:07:28 CEST 2014 Timsen

In the morning of June 30, 2014, the "KBV 033" released the "KBV 002 - Triton" which had started recovering oil spilling out of the wreck of the cargo vessel "Immen", 2999 gt (IMO-Nr. 7406758), off Gotska Sandön. During the day the "KBV 033" attempted to investigate the wreck with an ROV. The wreck was located at 133 meters depth and was covered by nets, ropes and debris. The survey was stopped because of the high risk of the ROV getting entangled in the mess. The oil that came up owas of varying character. The heavier parts can be taken up by environmental protection vessels. The lighter parts of the spill will evaporate at the surface. The administrative boards in the counties Öland, Gotland, Stockholm, Östergötland and Södermanland have been informed. Weather conditions for taking up the oil were good until July 2, then winds were expected to increase slightly. The oil drift forecast showed no risk of oil reaching the coast during the next three days. The spill was detected via satellite monitoring on June 29. A Coast Guard surveillance aircraft and an RIB from Gotland were dispatched. In the morning of June 30, it was concluded that the oil was thought to come from the "Immen" which sank under mysterious circumstances on June 2, 1977, enroute to Lübeck.
