Coast Guard investigating oil pollution

Wed Feb 14 10:43:58 CET 2024 Timsen

On Feb 13, 2024, oil from a discharge at sea drifted ashore in Stenungsund. On Feb 14 only a negligible amount of oil still was left. Limiting measures have been taken by the port. The Swedish Coastguard was on site with environmental protection equipment in readiness and the 'KBV 001 Poseidon'. A surveillance flight was to pass the site in the morning to map the release, which was not possible on Feb 13 due to low cloud bank. The crew of the 'KBV 001' reported that only an extremely small amount of oil could be seen on the surface. The oil was already mixed with water, which made it difficult to assess the amount of oil. The emergency services coordinated with the police, who was also investigating the causes of the spill.

Poseidon took 569 migrants to Palermo

Fri Aug 28 09:57:42 CEST 2015 Timsen

In the morning of Aug 27 the "KBV 001 - Poseidon" arrived at the port of Palermo. The 569 migrants aboard were examined by medical staff. Italian authorities and the Coast Guard started to disembark the migrants. On Aug 26 at 6 a.m. the "Poseidon" had been tasked to assist a dinghy in distress at sea with 130 people on board, all of whom could be saved. A wooden boat in distress was detected nearby short time later, from which 439 people could be saved. OO the lower deck, the crew of the "Poseidon" found more than 50 deceased. The cause of the death was undetermined. The survivors' condition varied. The crew, consisting of personnel from the Coast Guard and police, provided first aid and also received the assistance of Doctors Without Borders from a ship nearby. Patrol boat recovered more than 50 dead migrants

Thu Aug 27 11:11:38 CEST 2015 Timsen

On Aug 25, 2015, the "Poseidon" found the bodies of more than 50 migrants in the hold of a vessel off the coast of Libya. During the operation around 430 migrants were saved. The "Poseidon" was already rescuing 130 migrants from a raft north of Libya's coast when it got a call to assist a nearby wooden ship. The Swedes rescued 439 survivors from the wooden boat then looked for the bodies. The crew had to cut up the deck of the wooden boat to get to the bodies) in a safe way. The victims probably died of asphyxiation. The corpses were placed in body bags to make sure they didn't come into contact with the survivors. In addition to the 51 dead discovered by the "Poseidon" crew, three women were found dead in another migrant boat and another corpse was found during the 10 rescue operations that were launched the same day.
