Wreck removal cost 11,5 million Dollar

Mon Sep 24 11:50:46 CEST 2018 Timsen

The dismantling of the "Kathryn Spirit", abandoned in Beauharnois since 2011, will have cost the Canadian government $ 11.5 million. And even though the wreck has now completely beem removed from the St. Lawrence, the end of the work on the site was planned only for the fall of 2019. The bill for dismantling and for site restoration and additional work" amounts to $ 11.46 million. The federal government, which had to take over the wreckage of the ship, now has to remove the backfill that was installed to dismantle the wreck. This should be done in December 2018. But the restoration of the site will be completed only at the end of October 2019.

Dismantling progressing as scheduled

Mon Sep 10 11:28:43 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Kathryn Spirit" should be gone by the end of September in Beauharnois with the work being on schedule. The wreck was dismantled to 85%, including cleaning, ballasting, pumping out hydrofluids and cutting the hull. The asbestos removal is over. The embankment should be removed by December. The site will then be restored to the state it was before the ship arrived in Beauharnois. The deadline is the spring of 2019. Dismantling on schedule

Tue Jul 24 18:28:10 CEST 2018 Timsen

The dismantling of the "Kathryn Spirit" in Lake Saint-Louis at Beauharnois, should be completed by the end of August. the works is in line with the schedule, which was set by Sep 1 at the latest, seven years after the Groupe St-Pierre acquired it in order to dismantle it and sell the metal. Unable to obtain authorization from Quebec City and the City of Beauharnois to proceed with the operations, the owner sold the ship to a Mexican company which then intended to tow it abroad. Without the approval of the authorities concerned, the company abandoned the "Kathryn Spirit". In 2016, Ottawa agreed to remove the vessel at its expense. The Groupe St-Pierre was awarded a first $ 7.9 million contract to erect a cofferdam to stabilize the wreck, and a second contract of $ 11.1 million in October 2017 to dismantle it.
