Bilal Erdoğan’s firm buys new tanker for $18 mln
The BMZ Group, a company run by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son Bilal, alongside other family members, has purchased an $18 million tanker which will carry a Maltese flag. The M/T Shovket Alekperova is the third in a series of five tankers to be purchased by BMZ, the total cost of which will be around $90 million. The new tanker is 140 meters long and 16 meters wide and has a 7,100 deadweight tonnage (DWT) capacity. Last year, the company purchased two tankers, which had a price tag of $53 million combined. The BMZ Group is expected to receive the remaining two tankers before the end of this year. The company had ordered 10 tankers; however, it canceled the purchase of five of the vessels for unspecified reasons. The BMZ Group is reportedly taking advantage of the flag of convenience practice; that is, when a ship’s owner registers it in another country, enabling the owner to avoid paying taxes. The registered country’s flag is subsequently flown from the ship. http://www.hellenicshippingnews.com/bilal-erdogans-firm-buys-new-tanker-for-18-mln/
