Container ship caused oil spill

Fri Nov 08 09:57:30 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Kamouiki‘ spilled oil into Honolulu Harbor. The Coast Guard was working on cleanup on Nov 7, 2019, after the container ship spilled oil on Nov 6 during a fueling operation near Pier 19. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a report from the master of the vessel in the evening that heavy fuel oil discharged during bunkering operations with a barge. The crew of the vessel immediately secured the discharge, activated their Vessel Response Plan, and began clean-up operations. It was not immediately clear how much oil spilled or how much fuel the vessel held. Pacific Environmental Corporation and Marine Spill Response Corporation representatives deployed 25 bales of absorbent material stretching from the stern of the vessel to Pier 22. Two response vessels arrived on scene and deployed 1600 feet of hard boom surrounding the 25 bales of absorbent material and spilled oil. Two response vessels arrived on scene and deployed 1600 feet of hard boom surrounding the 25 bales of absorbent material and spilled oil. A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew completed an over-flight this morning of the impacted area and confirmed some of the oil had leaked out of the contained area and was coming ashore near Coast Guard Base Honolulu on Sand Island. Clean-up of the impacted area was on-going. So far, about 84 gallons of oil has been recovered with sorbent material, and another 40 gallons have been cleaned up by skimmers currently deployed in the area. There were no reports of impacted wildlife. Report with photos: https://www.manisteenews.com/news/science/article/Officials-responding-to-oil-spill-from-cargo-ship-14818888.php#photo-18577511
