Complicated medevac on the Ems

On Dec 29, 2018, a crew member of the "Jowi" which was underway on the Ems river needed to be medevaced. The master berthed the ship close behind the Friesen Bridge in Weener at pilings 50 meters from the shore and issued a mayday call. Besides an emergency doctoor and the rescue service also the fire rescue in Weener and the water rescue of the fire brigade in Leer were alerted. It was planned to transfer the medical personnel aboard by boat, but due to the low water level and the stron current this was impossible. Only in Leer a boat could be launched. Also a customs boat headed to the barge, and in order not to lose more time, the rescue helicopter Christoph 26 was alerted. After it proved to be impossible to intervene with the boats available, the doctor was winched onto the barge. After the patient was stabilized, he was hoisted aboard the helicpter and taken to shore where an ambulance was waiting to take him to hospital.
