Aid ships back in Larnaca
The sea convoy, consisting of the 'Jennifer' and the 'Open Arms' with 240 tons undelivered food for Gaza returned to Larnaca on April 3 after the killing of aid workers of World Central Kitchen (WCK) in an Israeli airstrike on the evening of April 1. The 'Jennifer' dropped anchor just outside the port. The 'Open Arms' had already arrived earlier. The undelivered aid was part of a consignment of about 340 tonnes sent to Gaza from Cyprus on March 30. The aid workers killed in Gaza had just finished work unloading 100 tonnes from a barge, also sent from Cyprus. The WCK, active in Gaza since October, has paused operations in the territory after the killings, and turned around its flotilla of ships back to Cyprus. Aid ships return to Larnaca after deadly air strike on WCK employees
The "Jennifer" as well as the tugs "Open Arms" and "Ledra Dynamic" returned to Larnaca on April 2, 2024, after the death of seven employees of World Central Kitchen in the Gaza Strip in an airstrike. Only a barge carrying around 110 pallets of goods was unloaded in the Gaza Strip before the aid convoy was attacked on the mainland. The 'Jennifer' then set sail without having accomplished anything. The ship had around 250 tons of relief supplies on board. The aid organization immediately stopped its operations in the region in light of the fatal incident. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the attack on foreign aid workers in the Gaza Strip and spoke in a video message of a "tragic case of an accidental hit by our armed forces against innocent people in the Gaza Strip." The Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis and EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who met in Nicosia on the morning of April 2, strongly condemned the incident, but also pleaded that aid to the suffering population in the Gaza Strip should not suffer as a result. Jennifer sailed from Larnaca
The 'Jennifer', transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of the Amalthea project, departed from Larnaca on March 29. The voyage to Gaza will take about three days. The 'Jennifer' would also tow the barge that the first ship, 'Open Arms', had transported to Gaza with 200 tons of food around two weeks ago. She will accompany the Jennifer along with another support vessel to transport equipment. The missions are organized by the World Central Kitchen (WCK) NGO.
