Video about miraculuous rescue of cook published
The 29-year-old man still has nightmares and vows to never return to the sea again. He has taken a new job as cook on shore. Okene was the only survivor of the crew of 12 when the "Jascon 4" capsized and sank at a depth of about 100 feet. The cook survived on only one bottle of Coke. Two flashlights that he had found gave up after less than one day. In the dark, he had almost given up hope after three days when he suddenly heard the sound of a boat, a hammering on the side of the vessel and then, after a while, saw lights and the rising waters around him bubbling. Odjegba Okene was found about 60 hours after the sinking. . He knew it had to be a diver, but he was on the wrong end of the cabin. He saw the light but before he could get to him, he was already out. He tried to follow him in the pitch darkness but couldn’t trace him, so he went back. The divers from the Dutch company DCN Diving were looking only for bodies and already had recovered four corpses when they came upon Okene. When the diver returned, Okene had to swim again to reach him and still he did not see him. So he tapped him at the back of his neck. When the diver saw his hand he said “corpse, corpse, a corpse,” into his microphone, reporting up to the rescue vessel. When he brought his hand close to Okene, he pulled on his Hand. “He’s alive! He’s alive! He’s alive!”, the diver shouted. The diver first used hot water to warm him up, then attached him to an oxygen mask. Once saved from sunken boat, he was put into a decompression chamber for 60 hours before he could safely return to the surface. He still suffers nightmares. Man who spent three days in an air bubble in 30m depth rescued by South-African divers
In what has been described as an incredible feat, a team of South African divers, including at least four from Durban, has rescued a man who spent three days in an air bubble – 30m under the sea, after the tugboat he was in capsized off the coast of Nigeria. Ten other crew members died and one is still missing. According to the owners of the boat, West Africa Ventures, the vessel capsized. However, it did not sink to the bottom, leaving the rescued man, Nigerian Okene Harrison, 30m below the surface.
10 bodies recovered
Divers have recovered the bodies of 10 sailors who drowned when the "Jascon 4" sank. One more sailor remained missing 14 nautical miles off the coast of Escravos. The company has halted recovery efforts as the ship was now too unstable for divers to work in.
