Runaway reefer Irina preparing for towage to Sakhalin
Reefer Irina is anchored in position 43 59.3N 145 50.9E, Yuzhno-Kurilskaya Bay, Kunashir Island, Kuril Archipelago. Engine room is one-third flooded, salvors pump out water and put extra seal on shaft log. Vessel is to be towed to Korsakov port, Sakhalin Island, by salvage tug Atlas, ETD 1100 Moscow time Jan 16. Breaches patched
Rescuers have patched holes in the hull of the "Irina", which had developed two breaches and was drifting in the Pacific Ocean. Currently, both the "Irina" and the rescue vessel "Atlas", were riding out bad weather at sea. On Jan 8, rescue tugs had managed to catch the anchor chain of the drifting reefer and pulled it to Kuashir.
Irina towed to Kunashir
The Russian rescue vessels "Atlas" and "Suvorovets" finally have towed the reefer "Irina" to the island of Kunashir from the Pacific Ocean. After temporary repairs the ship is to be moved to Vladivostok lateron. The crew of 19 is currently accomodated in the city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk.
