Laid up ferry suffered water ingress
On Oc 8, 2019, at noon the 'Ionian Sky' of the bankrupt Nel Lines which has beenlaid up at the Kynosoura Salamina Shipyard in Ambelakia since September 2013, developed a list to starboard side due to water ingress. Officers from the Port Authority hurried to the berth. The shipowner and the shipyard were immediately informed and a floating oil barrier was placed around the ship. In March 2018 there were rumors that the ship was to be purchased by a Portuguese company that intended to insert it on the Setubal - Funchal route, but the plans never materialized and probably sealed his fate of the ferry which had been chartered to the long-suffering NEL Lines to service the Thessaloniki / Kavala - Mytilene - Chios - Samos - Ikaria line. The route was served for only one and a half seasons, before the ship was decommissioned at Kinousa (Salamina Vineyards) on Sep 19, 2013, due to the financial collapse of his company.
