Ship leaked oil into Fremantle port

Sat Jan 12 18:02:09 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Nauma" has leaked oil into Fremantle waters, with authorities worried it could take days and hundreds of thousands of dollars to clean. The alarm was raised on Jan 12, 2019, at 1 a.m. at Berth 11 at the north-eastern end of the inner harbour with oil spilling out of the ship. Specialist teams laid absorbent booms at both ends of the ship to try and trap the heavy leak. The oil came through one of the strainer boxes from the sea chest. The Fremantle Ports Authority expected the clean-up could take a couple of days and were urging the public to stay clear of the spill zone. The leak had been contained in the afternoon with authorities praising the ship’s crew for their cooperation. Divers awee expected to assess the cargo ship for a second time to make sure no more oil was leaking.
