Captain calls to let trapped ship refuel with low sulphur fuel
As the Kitimat aluminium smelter strike entered its fourth week on Aug 16, 2021, the captain of the 'Indiana', which has been trapped at Rio Tinto's Terminal B wharf since July 17, was calling on the Union and Rio Tinto to let it be refuelled. The master of the vessel said it will run out of Emission Control Area (ECA) compliant low sulphur marine fuel if not refuelled by the end of August. Federal regulations state that any vessel docked in Canadian waters can only be refuelled with low sulphur marine fuel. The vessel does have high sulphur fuel onboard but switching to it would violate other federal, and International Maritime Organization mandates. The 'Indiana' has requested 100 to 170 metric tonnes of low sulphur fuel.
