Fire in engine room
A fire broke out in the engine room of the "Independent", 2253 ts (EU-No.: 2322924; MMSI-No.: 244650900; CS: PD3055), on Sep 5, 2018, at 5 p.m. on the Lek at Langerak. The ship had sailed from Antwerp at 8.50 a.m. and had no cargo on board. Several emergency services have been called. Because the ship was difficult to reach, an aerial platform has also been deployed. By applying an extra layer of foam, the fire department got the fire under control around 5.30 p.m. During the extinguishing work, a firefighter suffered from heat build-up. Ambulance workers came to the site to treat the man. The Lek dike was closed between Melk Way and Boonevliet Way for all traffic. The barge bethed in Zwijndrecht on Sept 6 at 8 a.m. Dutch reports with photos: https://www.zhzactueel.nl/2018/09/06/brand-op-binnenvaartschip-langerak-brandweerman-onwel/ https://www.hetkontakt.nl/regio/alblasserwaard/112/159376/brand-in-machinekamer-binnenvaartschip-op-lek-bij-langerak
