Rescue craft took victims of gas accident ashore

Wed Jan 29 12:16:14 CET 2014 Timsen

In the midday hours of Jan 25 the NSRI Port Elizabeth crew were placed on alert to prepare to launch to rendezvous with the "Huan Yu 1" to evacuate the injured crew members and to assist in the removal to shore of a deceased crewman, the victims of the reported refrigeration gas leak onboard the ship. At 9.30 p.m. the "Spirit of Toft" was launched, accompanied by a Transnet National Ports authority health official, the SA Police Services and EC Government Health EMS paramedics, and rendezvoused with the ship three nautical miles off-shore of Port Elizabeth. Nine patients were ttransferred onto the sea rescue craft, and the body of the deceased man was lowered onto its deck. Police detectives boarded the ship to initiate investigations, part of an inquest opened by the police, into the gas leak accident. The patients were medically evaluated and treated by the EMS paramedics and they are in stable conditions. They had suffered refrigeration gas inhalation. Port Health officials evaluated the safety of the ship. The patients were transported to hospital in stable conditions by EMS ambulance and the body of the deceased man was handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.
