Container ship saved 194 migrants
The "Zeran" saved 194 migrants on May 3, 2015, from a rubber boat and took them to Catania. Five refugees drowned when they fell into the water after the engine of the rubber boat exploded off Sicily. The "Zerań" was headed to Libya when it received a call for assistance from the Italian Navy. When the ship reached the boat, some passengers were already overboard. Crew members on the ship shouted for order, a fallreep was going to be lowered, everyone would make it on board. But the prospect of rescue sparked a panic. Some passengers were caught beneath the crush of people, while others were flung into the chilly, blue water. The uneven distribution of weight pushed one end of the dinghy into the water, causing it to deflate and start to sink. After the last passengers had clambered out of the dinghy, five trampled bodies were left floating amid garbage and pools of seawater. Between five and 40 others were thought to have drowned when they were pushed overboard. The crew on board managed to save 81 men, 8 women and 2 children. Italian naval units then transferred a further 103 refugees to the Polish ship, taking the overall number of saved to 194. Despite the crews' best efforts five migrants did not survive the incident. The refugees, mainly Ethiopians, were then transported to the Sicilian port of Catania.
