Five crew members medevaced after wave damaged ship
Short time after the 'Arklow Day' left Avilés on Dec 9, 2019 at 8.10 p.m., where the consignee Algeposa was in charge of unloading a cargo of 9.950 tons slabs from Dunkerque for the Aviles factory, the ship encountered rough seas in the Biscay with waves of up to 9 meters height. At 10.30 p.m. a stray wave smashed a part of the deck and flooded a room where five crew were located, seriously injuring all of them, off the coast of Aviles. They suffered wounds by steel pieces of shattered parts of the compartment all over their bodies. Salvamento Marítimo deployed the Helimer 206 helicopter from Cantabria which was on a training flight to medevac the victims. For two hours in very challenging conditions, the rescue team fought the intenxe swell, but finally they managed to airlift the injured, four Filipinos and one Ukrainian, and transferred them to the port of Gijón. One was taken to the Hospital de Jove in A Cabueñes, three to the Jove's hospital and the one with the most serious injuries to the Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA). Also the 'María de Maeztu' and 'Salvamar Rigel' were mobilized to the scene. Crewman killed by snapping mooring line
A 35 year old Filipino seaman was killed by a snapping mooring line on Sep 9, 2012, at 12.45 p.m. when the "Flinter Aland" was berthed in the western lock of Terneuzen while being enroute Gent. He died on scene of his injuries. The Dutch captain and the remaining crew were questioned by the Police. Management and staff at Flinter expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased colleague. The company is currently in the process of informing the next of kin and will be offering its full support to the family in these extremely difficult times. Immediately after the tragic event Flinter has notified the relevant authorities. The "Flinter Aland" remained berthed at Terneuzen with company senior representatives and authorities attending the vessel immediately offering support to the crew on board. A full investigation on the incident will be conducted by relevant authorities.
