Master of barge injured in allision

Tue Oct 13 10:20:32 CEST 2015 Timsen

On Oct 11, 2015, at 11.15 a.m. the "Black Pearl", 1498 ts (EU-No.: 04700060), which was coming from Gelsenkirchen, allided with a bridge spanning the Mittelland Canal in Hannover and hit a steel scaffolding underneath the building. The 31 year old master suffered slight injuries when being hit by the breaking roof of the wheelhouse which was completely destroyed. The 30 year old female deck hand remained uninjured. A vehicle transported aboard was damaged as well as the scaffolding of the construction site which suffered a damage of around 50.000 Euro. The master stated that driftwood had suddenly blocked the propeller so that ballast water inside the cargo hold gushed forward, causing the stern to rise. On Oct 13 the "Black Pearl" was to continue the eastbound canal transit with a temporary wooden wheelhouse.
