A deflagration in the engine room of the "Santa Ana" which was berthed at the Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven injured 11 workers in the foremidday hours of May 9, 2012. One of them life-threatening. He was flown into a special hospital in Hamburg in the evening. Two others were taken to hospitals in Bremen and Sanderbusch near Wilhelmshaven by helicoper. All men, among them the master of the tanker, had suffered burns and fractures. The fire brigade used a rescue basket to get aboard. Jointly with the yard workers they were able to keep the fire which followed the deflagration from spreading. All openings were closed and the engine room flooded with CO2. At 12.30 p.m. the fire was out. Fire fighters with breathing apparatus penetrated the smokey engine room. 55 rescue workers were on scene. The "Santa Ana“ entered the floating dock of the yard start of May.
