17 men rescued after Han Splendour was abandoned
17 crewmembers abandoned the "Han Splendour" off Batanes about 165 nautical miles east of Batan Island in Batanes in Northern Luzon on Dec 22, 2012. The Philippine Coastguard launched a search for the crew which included 11 Myanmar nationals and six Koreans, who had entered lifeboats. The Philippine Coast Guard did not immediately indicate what caused the 17 crewmembers to abandon the vessel. The Korean Coast Guard had sent a distress alert, and the Coast Guard units in Northern Luzon and Batanes reacted on the call. A Hong Kong-registered merchant ship rescued the crew early on Dec 23. They stated to have entered a lifeboat late on Dec 22 when the vessel sank in waters 185 miles northeast of the Philippines. A South Korean patrol plane had rushed to the scene and asked for help from the Hong Kong freighter that was sailing nearby. A South Korean patrol boat was heading to the scene to provide safekeeping to the men.
