Report into fatal grounding accident published

Thu Nov 28 11:18:45 CET 2024 Timsen

On Jan 26, 2024, the 'Gunn-Lotte' suffered propeller damage and ended up in the reefs outside Stamsund. When the lifeboat 'Det Norske Veritas' was trying to pull the fishing vessel off shore, it ran aground itself, and at the same time the fishing vessel capsized, according to the Accident Investigation Board's report. The fisherman ended up in the sea, not wearing an inflatable life jacket. A rescuer jumped into the sea to save the fman, but he was later declared dead. From the time the fisherman fell into the sea until the rescuer was with him, it only took 3-4 minutes, but the fisherman was then unconscious. According to the Accident Investigation Board's report, it is unclear what causedhim to lose consciousness so quickly, but the fall into the cold water may have led to cold shock, which, in combination with waves, increased the risk of inhaling water and drowning. The Accident Investigation Board emphasized that the use of a life jacket significantly increases survivability in cold water and reduces the risk of shock in the event of a fall overboard. The life jacket had been found and was ready in the wheelhouse, but it was unclear why it was not used, as Kystradio Nord several times asked the fisherman to put it on. "The accident shows that a situation can quickly develop into a critical one, and acting proactively and using the aids you have on board can be decisive. In addition, it is important to follow the instructions given by Kystradioen and the other rescue agencies," says the Accident Investigation Board's report.
