Container ship breached by fenders
On Nov 11, 2015, the "MSC Gemma" bumped against the fender of the Zandvliet Lock in Antwerp and was damaged. The accident happened at 7.12 p.m. when the container ship was being pulled by two harbor tugs into the lock. The ship was leaving port with only 400 containers on board and had a shallow draft of only eight meters. This probably played a role when the ship was caught by winds of five Beaufort and slammed against the huge rubber wheels at the lock entrance with starboard side. Under the pressure the hull of the ship was ripped open above the waterline on a length of about three meters long and a width of 1,5 to two meters. It was decided to tow the ship into the Scheldt, turned around at the Schaar van Ouden Doel and then towed to the Churchill quay for repairs at berth 408.
