Passenger ship aground on the Elbe
The "Großer Michel" ran aground in the evening of Mar 2, 2017, around 9 p.m. with 47 passengers, mainly journalists on a charter tour, and a crew of two on board at the Rissen Shore on the Elbe. Initial attempts to pull the ship off failed. The ship heeled over 20 degrees and was high and dry at low tide, so the passengers were taken off with boats of the water police. Also the fire rescue attended the site. More than 50 forces were on scene. The passengers were shipped to the wharf Wittenbergen with small boats of the fire rescue and launches of the police. They were treated by medicals before being taken on with a bus. The former port ferry was refloated around 10.45 p.m. by a tug and returned to the berth Kehrwiederspitze with own power. A technical failure was thought to have caused the accident. The ship was detained for the length of investigations.
